Abstract

There is a very understandable tendency for scholars who have dealt with Latin American colonial painting to resort to the expedient of seeking unique explanations to account for the genesis and evolution of that art. These explanatory panaceas passed successively from the concept that the New World is but an appendix of the Spanish school; that the whole American phenomenon can be clarified based on the use of Flemish engravings; and more recently, to the notion of mannerism
