Abstract

The study addresses the analysis of the position of some clerics who supported the liberating hosts against the authorities of Spain.In this group is the person of the ecclesiastical Dr. Gregorio José de Merlos, who in 1780 was priest of the town of Macha, province of Chayanta, Archbishopric of La Plata or Chuquisaca (belonging to the new viceroyalty of Buenos Aires). The cleric sympathizes with the emancipatory hosts. The document that is later published is. an unpublished document (in my possession) consisting of 10 pages, in which the ecclesiastical Merlos recuses the prosecutor Don José de Castilla, a document legalized before the clerk Don Fé lix Paravisino, in Chuquisaca on December 5, 1776, and with certification before the notaries Terrasas and Guerra Michel, when Merlos was priest and vicar of Guachacalla de Carangas
